Sony Music vs. Napster: A Battle Over Unpaid Royalties

In a significant move within the music industry landscape, Sony Music has initiated a lawsuit against Napster, seeking $9.2 million in unpaid royalties. This legal action follows an extended period of missed payments, prompting Sony to terminate its licensing agreement with Napster earlier this year. The lawsuit further accuses Napster of continuing to distribute Sony’s music and video content despite the agreement’s cancellation, introducing serious copyright infringement issues.

This is not the first time Napster has faced challenges regarding royalty payments. Earlier in the year, both distributors and labels openly criticized the platform for similar issues. More recently, SoundExchange, a U.S. licensing firm, pursued legal action against Sonos over allegations of unpaid royalties related to its Sonos Radio service, which Napster managed between 2020 and 2023.

These complications arise amidst Napster’s acquisition by Infinite Reality in March, a metaverse company that purchased Napster for $207 million shortly after completing a substantial $3 billion funding round. Given the acquisition’s financial scale, one might expect a swift resolution of Napster’s royalty debts to be a straightforward task, assuming Infinite Reality’s commitment to Napster’s ongoing presence in streaming rather than solely as an AI and metaverse asset. “We remain committed to rebuilding Napster’s relationships with all of the major labels and are hopeful for a swift and amicable resolution,” commented a Napster spokesperson.

EU’s Belem Project Concludes with Final Lyric-Translation Grants

Meanwhile, in Europe, the Belem consortium, initiated with €2 million in funding from the EU, has unveiled its final round of lyric-translation grants. Since its inception in 2023, the project has aimed to bridge linguistic gaps in music. The latest grants saw 14 artists awarded up to €3,000 each, facilitating the translation of 32 songs into 18 European languages.

Among the grant recipients are Irish comedy group The 2 Johnnies, Serbian composer Ana Krstajić, and Croatian Eurovision hopeful Elis Lovric. “These 14 winners represent the future of European music: diverse, genre-spanning, and ready to resonate globally,” remarked Robert Singerman, co-founder of the consortium and SVP of LyricFind.

Beyond individual grants, Belem’s funding has supported the development of Belem Lyric Studio—a cutting-edge AI-driven lyric translation tool—and has included educational initiatives at industry conferences.
