UMG and WMG Poised to Sign Landmark AI Licensing Deals

In a strategic move highlighting the evolving intersection of music and technology, Universal Music Group (UMG) and Warner Music Group (WMG) are reportedly close to finalizing significant licensing agreements with several artificial intelligence (AI) companies. According to the Financial Times, emerging AI music startups such as Suno, Udio, ElevenLabs, Stability AI, and Klay Vision are on the cusp of these landmark deals, which could redefine the music industry’s approach to generative AI technologies. Notably, Google and Spotify are also involved in discussions, exploring the potential integration of AI tools onto their platforms, although Spotify is still in the initial stages of such explorations. The proposed agreements are expected to establish a payment model akin to streaming, wherein an AI-generated song triggers a micropayment. However, these developments prompt pivotal questions about the distribution of publishing revenues and the impact on artists and songwriters.

Historically, ElevenLabs has set a precedent in its agreements with Merlin and Kobalt by securing parity between publishing and recorded music revenues, a significant consideration for the upcoming major label deals. Meanwhile, the involvement of Suno and Udio is particularly noteworthy given their ongoing legal battles with the majors over copyright infringement. Settling these disputes through collaborative agreements could prevent protracted litigation, yet raises concerns about the industry’s perceived endorsement of companies that allegedly leveraged copyrighted content without consent.

The challenge lies in balancing these partnerships without alienating GenAI startups that adhere to ethical practices from inception. Moreover, artist and songwriter perspectives are crucial, as the majors demand permission, payment, and transparency from AI services while ensuring that creators’ rights and revenues are safeguarded. Communication strategies will be pivotal in elucidating the financial implications and protective measures embedded within these agreements to artists’ and songwriters’ bodies. While this development marks substantial progress in AI-music integration, its ultimate success hinges on how effectively the labels can align these innovations with the interests and rights of their human creators.
