Spotify Reports: Canadian Artists Thriving Globally Despite Local Challenges

Canadian artists continue to make waves on a global scale, with Spotify’s latest financial report showcasing their significant impact. In 2024, Canadian musicians saw their Spotify royalties rise by 5%, reaching nearly $460 million CAD. An impressive 92% of this revenue stemmed from international listeners, and independent artists and labels accounted for 40% of the earnings, highlighting the country’s burgeoning indie scene.

Every day, music by Canadian artists garners 15 million streaming hours worldwide, featuring prominently on 2.4 billion user playlists. These statistics underscore Canada’s role as a major music exporter and pivotal contributor to the global music landscape. However, amidst this success, Spotify has directed a pointed message toward Canadian policymakers.

The discussion centers around a proposed 5% levy on the revenues of global streaming services within Canada, intended to fund local content creation with $200 million CAD annually. In response, Spotify, alongside Amazon and Apple, legally contested this levy. Their representative body, DiMA, in conjunction with Music Canada, launched a campaign against the so-called “streaming tax,” arguing it could lead to increased costs for consumers—a scenario that unfolded in October 2024 when Spotify adjusted its Canadian prices.

Streaming services advocate that they already substantially support local artists and should not be mandated to contribute additionally to the content fund. They argue that digital streaming offers a platform for Canadian artists, who might not fit into traditional radio molds, to reach diverse and international audiences. This is particularly true for female and racially diverse artists who experience greater exposure via streaming than through conventional radio.

Spotify’s current data release not only strengthens its stance against the levy but also signals other countries considering similar policies. The figures champion Canada’s musical exports and underscore the importance of global digital platforms in promoting and sustaining independent artists. As this debate unfolds, Canadian artists continue to amplify their voices, enriching the world’s musical tapestry while navigating the challenges of industry regulations.
