France’s Music Landscape: Opportunities Amidst Streaming Challenges

France’s music industry continues its upward trajectory, despite streaming subscriptions lagging behind expectations. The latest data from SNEP reveals a 3.4% rise in recorded music revenues, reaching €432 million in the first half of 2025. While nearly 63% of these revenues come from paid subscriptions, marking a 4.9% increase, the growth rate does not yet meet industry hopes. This development highlights a pivotal moment for the French market: the need to amplify streaming engagement while celebrating local successes.

A promising aspect for France’s music scene is the strong presence of domestic talent. Local artists captured two-thirds of the top 200 albums last year, with the export value of French music soaring by 19% in 2024. This robust performance underscores France’s vibrant cultural influence on the global stage.

However, challenges persist. Physical sales edged up by 4.4%—with vinyl enjoying a notable resurgence at 9.4%—while ad-supported audio streaming improved only slightly by 2%. In contrast, revenues from traditional music videos dropped by 6.8%, as audiences gravitate toward short-form content on social media.

Industry leaders are responding to these dynamics with varied perspectives. According to Guilhelm Cottet of UPFI, growth is hindered by concentrated revenue streams and the increasing role of AI and digital fraud. Yet Azzedine Fall of Deezer sees these hurdles as opportunities, emphasizing the untapped potential for innovative growth where new artists and platforms can thrive.

To harness this potential, SNEP’s Alexandre Lasch stresses the importance of expanding usage beyond just gaining new subscribers. Bridging generational gaps and enhancing platform participation are critical strategies for France to fully capitalize on its musical momentum.

The current landscape showcases both the resilience and potential of France’s music industry—an unfolding narrative rich with possibilities for artists, fans, and the industry alike.
