France’s Music Streaming Growth: Challenges and Opportunities in 2025

France’s recorded music revenues have increased by 3.4% to €432 million in the first half of 2025, according to SNEP, yet the growth in paid streaming subscriptions, which now account for nearly 63% of the market, remains below industry expectations. Although subscription revenues rose by 4.9% year-on-year, this performance has not met the anticipated benchmarks. Nonetheless, the resilience of the French music market remains notable, with SNEP indicating that the foundational strength provided by these subscriptions helps sustain momentum in an entertainment sector facing challenges across various domains. Physical sales have also shown a positive trend, climbing by 4.4%, with vinyl sales experiencing a 9.4% increase. Although ad-supported audio streaming grew by 2%, the decline in video revenues by 6.8% highlights a shift towards short formats mainly on social networks.

Domestic artists hold a significant position, with two-thirds of the top 200 albums in the previous year being local, contributing to the 19% growth in the export value of French music in 2024. However, structural barriers such as revenue concentration among few artists, the dominance of major labels, and issues surrounding AI and fraud are constraining streaming growth, as noted by Guilhelm Cottet of UPFI. In contrast, Azzedine Fall from Deezer views the under-penetration of streaming in the market as an opportunity for new artists and platforms.

SNEP’s Alexandre Lasch emphasizes the need to not only recruit subscribers but also to enhance usage by attracting the underrepresented older audience and retaining younger generations who prefer short formats. SONO Music, as a proactive entity in the global music landscape, remains committed to navigating these industry dynamics, advocating for innovation, artist empowerment, and fostering strategic collaborations to address these challenges and harness growth opportunities.
