Universal Music India’s Strategic Bollywood Partnership with Excel Entertainment

Universal Music India has made a significant move by acquiring a 30% stake in Excel Entertainment, a pivotal film production firm renowned for iconic Bollywood projects like “Dil Chahta Hai” and “Gully Boy.” This strategic acquisition, valuing Excel at approximately $266 million, underscores Universal Music Group’s renewed foray into the film music sector in India, following a hiatus of over two decades. This development emphasizes Universal’s commitment to expanding its influence within the Bollywood music landscape, aiming to amplify global audiences for Excel’s cinematic soundtracks. Excel Entertainment, also behind acclaimed series like “Mirzapur,” will now leverage Universal’s global distribution prowess for all prospective soundtracks via a new sub-label. As part of this groundbreaking agreement, Universal Music Publishing Group will serve as Excel’s exclusive music publishing partner, creating opportunities for Universal’s artists and repertoire to collaborate on future productions. CEO Devraj Sanyal of Universal Music India and South Asia will join Excel’s board, solidifying the alliance’s foundation. Excel’s leadership, including CEO Vishal Ramchandani and co-founders Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani, have expressed their ambition to globalize culturally rooted narratives through this partnership. This move aligns with Universal’s broader strategy of revitalizing its presence in the Indian music scene, previously illustrated by collaborations with Maddock Films. As soundtracks continue to captivate India’s burgeoning music market, this partnership positions Universal to play a pivotal role in shaping Bollywood’s musical future while aligning with similar industry trends, as evidenced by parallel deals such as Saregama’s investment in Bhansali Productions. This collaboration not only redefines Universal’s strategic direction but also reinforces Excel Entertainment’s vision of producing innovative, global content.
